About Us

Nestled alongside the historic Basingstoke Canal in the village of Odiham, The Waterwitch is a pub with a story that reaches back through centuries of local history.

Our building is a Grade II listed property, recognised for its special architectural and historic interest. Parts of the building date back to the 16th century, with later additions from the 18th century and beyond. Its traditional character reflects the long history of Odiham and the generations who have lived, worked and gathered here.

The pub was originally known as the New Inn before taking the name The Waterwitch, inspired by a real narrowboat that operated on the Basingstoke Canal. The name connects our pub directly to the waterway that has helped shape this part of Hampshire’s history.

The Basingstoke Canal opened in 1794, creating a route between Basingstoke and the River Wey Navigation in Surrey, which connected onwards to the River Thames. Originally built to transport agricultural produce and other goods, the canal played a role in the working life of the surrounding communities. After years of decline and neglect, restoration work began in the 1970s, and the navigable section was officially reopened in May 1991.

Today, the canal is a much loved part of Odiham, enjoyed by walkers, boaters and wildlife enthusiasts alike. Its towpaths, historic structures and peaceful waters offer a glimpse into the area’s past.

At The Waterwitch, we’re proud to be part of this heritage. Whether you’re joining us after a walk along the canal, meeting friends for a drink, enjoying a meal with family or simply looking for a welcoming local, we want you to feel at home.

A pub with history, a setting with character and a warm welcome for everyone.
